Dr. St. Hilaire was awarded a doctorate in horticulture from Iowa State University in 1998. He received his bachelor's and Master's degree in horticulture from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in 1992 and 1998, respectively, graduating at the top of the horticulture class. Along the way, he won the campus leadership award in 1996 for his work in the graduate student horticulture society.

At the undergraduate level, Dr. St. Hilaire's main teaching focus is landscape horticulture. He is currently responsible for instructing Ornamental Plant Materials I, Ornamental Plant Materials II, Landscape Design, Landscape Construction and Landscape Case Studies.

At the graduate level, he is responsible for teaching the Environmental Biology of Plants. This class is offered to horticulture, agronomy, and biology majors.

Dr. St. Hilaire research areas are urban landscape water conservation and the environmental stress physiology of woody ornamental plants. Current research projects are:
